First Things First, What Does Spring Do to Your Skin?

Spring marks the end of the icy bitterness and our skin’s deep craving for hydration and barrier protection. Now, it’s all about that deeply nourished skin and effortless glow. However, with the change in temperature, humidity, and sun exposure comes new skin changes and challenges to be aware of.

Let’s take a closer look at what the warmer months do to your skin and how to adjust your skincare in spring:

  1. More UV exposure — More desirable temperatures and longer days calls for more time spent outdoors basking in the sun. The reality? Unfortunately, you can have too much of a good thing, which sadly includes Vitamin D. As well as the increased risk of skin cancer, excessive sun exposure can also result in sunburn and premature ageing.
  2. Increased skin dryness and dehydration — While winter’s low humidity levels are generally one of the main culprits behind dry skin, this can spill over into a spring problem if not dealt with. Hotter days can lead to dehydrated skin if adequate hydration and skincare aren’t prioritised.
  3. Skin Allergies — When we think of spring, we think of the flowers in bloom and the birds and bees out in full force. However, we tend to forget that this can also wreak havoc on certain skin types. During springtime, more pollen is in the air, resulting in skin allergies characterised by rashes, hives, and increased sensitivity.
  4. Acne Breakouts — As the heat turns up, so does the sweat. Unfortunately, this can clog your pores and lead to unwanted breakouts. It’s important to keep your skin clean all year round, especially during the warmer months, when your pores are more susceptible to clogging.
  5. Glow, glow, GLOW — Despite the potential skin concerns that can come with warmer weather, there is one huge benefit we simply cannot ignore: the natural spring glow. Wondering why? Believe it or not, it’s not the glistening effect of sweating; it’s the result of improved circulation from spending more time active outdoors.

How to Transition Your Skincare from Winter to Spring

As we roll through the seasons, it’s no secret that our skin looks and feels different. As such, your skincare in spring should evolve with these changes — meaning a fresh new routine to welcome a fresh new season. Here’s a quick guide to help you transition your skincare ritual effortlessly from winter to spring:

Step 1: Cleanser

In winter, you most likely use a cream or oil-based cleanser to nourish your skin with extra moisture to avoid excessive dryness.

We recommend switching to a mild foaming or gel cleanser as the season changes to accommodate the warmer weather. This will help remove oil buildup and sweat from the skin (as well as sunscreen, make up, and environmental pollutants!).

Step 2: Exfoliation

In winter, it’s important to exfoliate less frequently, as doing so risks drying out your skin, which is already more susceptible to dryness.

However, as we spring into warmer weather, you’ll want to increase your exfoliating ritual again to remove built-up dead skin and prevent acne breakouts caused by clogged pores due to increased sebum production.

Step 3: Moisturiser

Unlike the thick, heavy moisturisers you were likely using in winter to help counteract the dryness in the air, your skincare in spring should mark the start of lightweight, water-based moisturisers that don’t feel heavy and greasy yet still promise to hydrate your skin.

Extra Spring Skincare Tips from the Experts:

  • Wear SPF50+ daily (no matter the weather or temperature!)
  • Make hydration your main priority (whether it’s increasing your water intake or incorporating hydrating serums like Hyaluronic Acid, focus the warmer months on hydration). • Focus on protecting your skin against environmental damage (more sun exposure and pollution in the air calls for better protection against environmental damage. Unlike winter, which focuses on skin barrier protection, spring should concentrate on adding antioxidants to your skincare ritual).

Wondering why we love Dr Tanya’s NuSonic 2.0 exfoliating device for the job? The NuSonic 2.0 uses patented technology that gently buffs away dead skin, fluff, daily dirt, grime, and more. The NuSonic’s ultrasonic vibrations gently massage the skin, stimulate collagen production, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles for a healthier, brighter, and more youthful complexion.

The glow ritual:

  1. Remove the protective cap.

4. Hyaluronic Acid

Why we love it: Hydration is one of the most underrated tips for glowing, supple skin, and guess what? Hyaluronic Acid Serum may offer just what you need to achieve it!

Hyaluronic Acid — A substance naturally produced by your body to help maintain soft, supple, glowing skin — is described as nature’s gift to your skin. Wondering why? It plays an incredible role in retaining moisture in your skin, holding over 1000 times its weight in water. It can be found in your skin, eyes, joints, and connective tissues. The downside? As you age, your body’s natural production slowly declines, resulting in a loss of volume and the emergence of fine lines and wrinkles.

The skin-loving perks:

  • Evens out complexion
  • Intensely hydrates your skin
  • Uses groundbreaking Hymagic 4D to deliver a four-dimensional hyaluronic network that deeply nourishes your skin and protects it from moisture loss
  • Helps to firm skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • Strengthens skin and increases cell function

The glow ritual: Apply 3-5 drops of Dr Tanya’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum to a cleansed face, neck, and decolletage morning and night before moisturising.
